I was surprised to find it on my screen the other day. It asked the question, "Is your Second Life experience getting better or worse?"

The brown noser in me immediately wanted to answer "better", but when I thought about it, it hasn't gotten any better. As you can see by my answer on the right, I chose the simple response that the grid seems to be buckling under the large amount of logins. I don't know if this is the real cause of the problems, but we've had more inventory loss, texture issues, and transfer problems than ever.

Did you receive the survey? The statement was issued just minutes ago by Lewis PR, Linden Lab's external public relations handler. Lewis PR provides public relations support for a wide variety of companies and organizations.

"At present, we have no firm evidence of wrongdoing from our own investigations into Wonderland nor from our Abuse Report channel."

Linden Lab therefore has not acted on reports about the site from Second Life users and from Second Life's child avatar community (we are told that reports have been being filed since July) because they have not been able to find any wrongdoing.

Linden Lab's full statement follows, after the jump.

Second Life is a 3D virtual world in which all the content is created and owned by its Residents. It is used by individuals, businesses, non-profits and educational organizations to communicate and collaborate in an immersive and compelling way. All Residents using Second Life MUST assert that they are over 18 years of age and that they will abide by our Terms of Service which prohibit illegal activity and by our Community Standards which prevent broadly offensive behavior. While the vast majority of Residents abide by these agreements and use Second Life in a constructive fashion, as with any communications technology, such as email, the phone or the Web itself, some seek to abuse the system and behave in an offensive manner.

At present, we have no firm evidence of wrongdoing from our own investigations into Wonderland nor from our Abuse Report channel. There's nothing objectionable nor illegal in having a child-like avatar in itself and we must assume innocence until proof of the contrary. That said, Linden Lab is morally opposed to and has zero tolerance for child pornography, simulated or otherwise, within Second Life.

It is a primary concern of ours to keep Second Life a safe and legal environment. Second Life Residents are held to a clearly defined Terms of Service and Community Standards to prevent illegal and/or broadly offensive activities, and it goes without saying that anyone engaged in these activities will be permanently banned from Second Life. Additionally, it is important to clarify that when we discover minors in Second Life, or when their presence is reported to us, we terminate their access. Underage users are automatically directed to Teen Second Life, an area specifically designed for non-adults, and offering them a rich, creative experience collaborating with other teens.

In addition, Linden Lab is in the process of implementing age verification measures to require age verification for entrance to parcels with adult content. More information about this can be found here:
http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/09/18/identity-verification-and-flagging-parcels-for-restricted-content/.

In the rare instances of suspected child pornography of which we have been informed, Linden Lab immediately works to remove the offending content and involves local authorities where appropriate. At present in the US, we work with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and are open to working with similar authorities in other countries, such as CEOPS.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Wonderland scandal spreads through the media

Filed under: News, Linden Lab, Mixed Reality

News of the Wonderland scandal is spreading through the UK press. Channel 5 News led with the piece - it's all over Sky News. Some of the UK's largest tabloids are picking it up - outlets with millions of readers. UK business magazine, The Business, has just taken up the story.

"users feel the virtual community is unsafe and uncensored; they're also deterred by the huge amount of sexually orientated activity which takes place in the world."

The Business magazine slams Linden Lab for their "unshakeable libertarian positions", and says "This will be a huge set back for Linden Labs [sic]".

Expect to be reading and hearing a lot more about this in the news in the coming days.

Of course, this activity directly contravenes Linden Lab policy - so, why didn't they act days or weeks ago, when this activity was reported to them?

We have been promised an official comment or statement from Linden Lab "shortly". That was nine hours ago.

They will, hereafter only respond to Live Chat or the Web Support Pages.

There is a side comment to the effect that this may not be universal: certainly there are people who still give out their email addresses, it would be interesting to suggest that, for example, Catherine Linden, in charge of PR, can't be reached that way. A policy statement would be useful, but I would suggest not holding your breath for that. There are mailing lists that still request email replies too, so presumably they don't count in this.

We all know SL is growing, and growing faster than LL, appreciably faster. However, is moving to a position of fewer routes of communication a good thing? In light of the earlier news about sexual ageplay in SL, I wonder if anyone will answer our emailed requests for a statement?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Linden Lab double-bills tier for some users

Filed under: News, Linden Lab, Gridbugs

Linden Lab says that they believe some users have been billed twice for tier (land use fees). But Sidewinder Linden is calling for you to fill in this survey to help the Lindens determine how inventory is still occurring. This is in addition to reporting inventory loss via the support portal.

The survey is mercifully short (9 questions, mostly pick one type answers), and forms part of the initiative both Moo and I wrote about recently. Let's hope not too many of us need to bookmark the survey page, and that it helps find out and stamp out inventory loss.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Linden Lab restores broken statistical feeds

Filed under: News, Linden Lab, Gridbugs

Linden Lab's public statistical data feeds all went down at 3:40PM SLT (US Pacific) yesterday. The sudden cessation of data updates led to some unreliable figures in our reporting, so we marked them as such at the time.

The problem was today traced to the faulty deployment of a backend script, which was fixed and redeployed at approximately 11:40AM SLT today. As such, today's statistics are also going to be a little out of whack, but the numbers should all be on the mark again for tomorrow.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Just what does LindeX sales mean?

Filed under: Stories, Linden Dollars, Linden Lab
Although I actually read the key metrics, I leave them for Tateru to comment on. However, this time there was an interesting comment in there:

September saw a major recovery from the sudden slump in Lindex sales in August. While July had shown nearly US$600,000 in sales, August's sales had dropped to US$163,239, but recovered in September to a much healthier $573,501.
This is, as anyone who follows my daily reports, can tell you, nonsensical at first sight. Today's report is about typical - US$59,000, which gives us monthly sales of somewhere around US$1.75 Million, rather than about US$0.5Million.

The difference lies in what they mean: LindeX sales from the monthly summary are actually supply linden sales, rather the sum of daily sales figures (which is somewhat confusing, but there you go). From Linden Labs perspective $593,501 is far healthier than $163,239, because it is, essentially, pure profit for them. From our perspective though what does it mean? Well, Supply Linden was introduced as a tool to control exchange rates, albeit only in one direction, and to keep them stable. When someone (or some subroutine more likely) notices a tendency for the L$ to strengthen too much, LL put out some L$ on the market at a suitable price. Supply increases and the price drops - in this case the drive to strengthen the L$ is abated. August was obviously a month with relatively little pressure that way, September more typical.

You can question the value, and even the ethics of this process - many people did when it was announced. Whether or not you agree with it, and despite my doubts amongst many others, the process does work. The exchange rate varies a bit of course, but floats around the L$270 mark quite reliably, and has done for as long as I've kept records and indeed for over a year now.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

September key metrics and statistics

Filed under: News, Accounts, Linden Lab

The latest metrics and statistics are out from Meta Linden this month, covering September. The August figures were widely described as disappointing.

Let's see how Second Life fared for September. Highlights after the fold.

Total signups increased by 343,961 (3.71%) compared to a growth of 704,603 (8.24%) in August.

Total premium accounts increased by a mere 454 (0.5%) compared to the previous month's 1,803 (2.03%).

The three most active regions by time spent per user were the Falkland Islands, Antigua/Barbuda and Bahrain. Overall, active users spent an average 46.5 hours in Second Life during the month of September.

The second life map grew by 31.6 square kilometres (3.76%) in September, compared to 59.77sqkms (7.66%) in August. The total now is 871.32sqkms of simulated space, of which 21.18% is Linden mainland, and the remaining 688.34 square kilometres are non-Linden estates.

September saw a major recovery from the sudden slump in Lindex sales in August. While July had shown nearly US$600,000 in sales, August's sales had dropped to US$163,239, but recovered in September to a much healthier $573,501.

Overall age demographics continue much as expected. 73% of the population for September were 25 years and older. The older you are, the more time you spend in Second Life: over-45's spent an average of 64.13 hours in September, 35-44 spent 57.06 hours, 25-34 spent 45.06 hours, and the 18-24's spent less than 30 hours.

Females spent nearly twice as long online in Second Life in September as the boys.

Face it, your aunt Tilley is more likely to be spending more of her time in Second Life than that early-adopting, tech-savvy young fellow.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Inventory Loss and You

I've been a bit hard on Linden Lab in the past, but I'd like to address something that I started, but never finished. The topic would be that of my loss of inventory in April of 2007. Linden Lab recently announced that they are doing what they can to minimize this situation, and I believe them. Eloise touched upon the subject, but I'd like to elaborate on it more from my standpoint.

What happened to me was like hitting the lottery. If I recall correctly, only about nine of us lost our entire inventory and they worked diligently to fix it for us. At the time, I wanted to calm the hysteria that I caused, so I ceased to report on it, but a funny thing happened along the way. I somehow became a shoulder to cry on about lost inventory. There are apparently many types of inventory loss, from single items disappearing, to folders not showing up. Some of these errors don't have fixes yet, but there are certain steps that you can take to keep this kind of loss at a minimum.

For example, it should be common sense that the more inventory you have, the more likely you are for some of your items to go missing. Some people are under the impression that 15k items is the perfect limit. Once you go beyond that, your inventory groans as it tries to load all of the data. Go through your inventory and decide what you don't need. Either give it away to a friend, delete it, or give it away to a newbie.

As for solving the perceived inventory loss problem where the folders are showing, but empty, I was given some great advice from Mia Linden. Try clearing your cache and restarting. When you're at the login screen, choose to go to either Brilliant or Montara. Stand still there until your inventory loads all the way. I've had this trick work multiple times when I thought my inventory was lost again.

If that doesn't work, bug report your issue, in detail, and know that Kona is on your side. He is constantly working with the bug testing team to make SL a better place for us. I wasn't exactly the model resident to him when I lost my inventory, but he still handled the situation with finesse, and for that, I am grateful. Hang in there, Second Life!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

What to do with Megaprims

Filed under: Building, Linden Lab, Op/Ed

If I had to decide which Second Life feature was the most profoundly useful to me, it wouldn't be the group tools, or streaming movies on a prim. Sculpted prims would certainly be in the running, but the "lumpy" nature of sculpties makes them less revolutionary than I had hoped (they aren't very good for, say, a car fender.) I would have to say, the coolest, most useful, "thank god I have them" feature, summed up in one word is:

Megaprims.

But I'm a little worried right now. Linden Lab appears to be fishing around for what the reaction would be to the removal of megaprims in a recent blog post by Michael Linden. Some cynics may say this is nothing more than an obligatory symbolic gesture before they go ahead and remove megaprims anyways. But I'm not cynical! I'm all sunshine, baby! So go ahead and read what Michael's has to say over at the Official Linden Lab blog. I'll take a shot at addressing his concerns here.

Parcel Encroachment - Michael is (rightfully) concerned about the abusive uses of megaprims. However, features such as llPushObject and the self-replication enabling combo of llGiveInventory and llRezObject open the door for potential abuse, indeed they are the foundation of most scripted griefing today. But these functions are never removed because of the compelling legitimate uses for them. It would therefore be inconsistent for Linden Lab to use this excuse to justify the removal of megaprims. Abusers should be punished, not people who need these tools.

Megaprims cause problems for Physics engines - If this is true, force prims over a certain size to become phantom. Problem solved. Ta-daaaa! Though I do wonder just how bad the physics problems really are. Megaprims seem to have some oddball bounding box issues, but I haven't seen performance problems due to them. I would also expect Havoc 4 to alleviate these problems, not make them worse. But like I said, if this is really a problem, don't remove them, make them phantom.

Graphic engine problems with prims over 256m - Well there are two problems. Render distance is calculated from the center of a prim to the user. So if your draw distance is set to 64 meters, and you are 65 meters from the center of the megaprim, you could be standing on it without ever seeing it. This isn't great but it's not the worst rendering problem I have ever seen in SL and it's hardly enough justification for removal. Also, Gene Replacement suggests on the Linden Blog that Second Life should calculate draw distance from the bounding box rather than the center of the prim. This seems like a reasonable fix.

The second problem is that large object culling is based on object size. Tiny objects get culled before large ones. Apparently megaprims, being mega and all, never get culled. I would think this was a very simple problem to fix. Once an object size is greater than 10m, simply default to using the value of 10m when calculating when objects get culled. But if I missed something here, then fine. Make the maximum size for megaprims 256 meters and this problem is solved too.

Now, if the worst case scenario actually unfolds and I somehow resist the urge to throw myself onto the megaprim funeral pyre, then here are some absolutely essential replacement features Linden Lab should provide to help recover from this devastating loss.

Arbitrarily Large Radii - Say you wanted to create a very large cylinder, one with a radius of 30 meters. Using smaller 10m cylinders would create a scalloped effect, and using flat prims will not look rounded. You can increase the smoothness by using a larger number of smaller prims to create the larger shape, but this could drastically increase prim usage.
One solution is to allow arbitrary radii when calculating the curved surfaces of prims. The prim size itself need never exceed 10m, but curved part of, say, the slice of a cylinder can be made shallower and shallower as the imaginary radius moves further and further away. You can then combine these 10meter prims to form one flawless mega cylinder. The same goes for any prim with curved surfaces including spheres, tubes, and tori.

Built-in tools for large shape creation - Next, Linden Lab should simplify the creation of large shapes using smaller prims by adding build tools that help with this task. There are scripts floating around that help with this process, but they're clunky, limited, and sometimes difficult to work with. Instead, Linden Lab should add large-shape construction to the resize tool. Imagine I have one single 10 meter prim. I edit it and resize it to 30 meters. Now when I examine this oversized sphere I notice that Second Life secretly replaced my ONE prim with 150 prims (or however many is necessary,) all automatically shaped and fitted to create my sphere. The offsets and repeats on the textured surfaces of each prim are automatically adjusted to ensure the texture resize behaved exactly as if the shape were one large prim.

This idea isn't perfect. For one thing, how will these prims know that they should reduce back to one single prim if I resize the sphere back down to 10m? It may have to be a one-way street, but it's better than nothing.

In scanning the comments on Michael Linden's blog entry, it would appear that the community really does want to keep megaprims. I sincerely hope that Linden Lab's mind isn't already made up on the subject. Let's keep megaprims around and send Linden Lab some mega-love for allowing them!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Curing inventory loss steps up a gear

I don't remember the first time I heard a massive complaint about inventory loss. (I do know hearing about upgrading Havok came before that though). Maybe it's only been a major issue for two years - I do remember one update that "collected" large parts of inventory of about 1 in 3 residents incorrectly, and more recently we've had the rezzing and losing no-copy items problem.

Although the former can still occasionally strike, particularly when "optimitsing inventory" the latter has been largely fixed. There are still issues however, as anyone can tell you. Linden Lab are, fortunately, taking this seriously and instituting a series of measures to hunt down and hopefully eradicate the issue once and for all. This will, inevitably take time, but if you'd like to know more, and/or contribute to the process have a read of the blog or go to office hours with Hamilton Linden on Wednesday at 2pm or add to the inventory loss wiki.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Bug, exploit, feature

Filed under: Gadgets, Stories, Linden Lab, Gridbugs, Updates, Op/Ed

Every MMO/NGO/VW has bugs. Every patch, every update for every one of them brings a slew of fresh bugs, glitches, imbalances and lost property. Dealing with those bugs, glitches and whatnot can be a pain in the ass quite frankly, but in Second Life, we're not just dealing with peoples' fun. We're also dealing with their revenue.

While Ginsu Linden made quite an effort to make everyone understand that Linden Lab understands the position that it is in, relative to the users, it's obvious enough from reading the comments that many of the users themselves either do not understand Linden Lab's position, or do not think Linden Lab understands it. Pick one.

Part of that position involves a bug. Technically, you'd call it an exploit. That being, a bug which (if you know how to use it) allows you to profit in a way that is unintentional or accomplish some task that is not normally permitted. We're not talking about cheating your cash balance, or purchasing land that isn't for sale, or making prims that are larger than the system nominally permits.

We're talking about the issue with llSetLinkPrimitiveParams(). A sitting avatar becomes a part of a set of linked prims. Until this function came along the fact that a sitting avatar was just another (temporary) member of the linkset wasn't really all that relevant, as there wasn't really anything you could do to the sitting avatar as a member of the linkset that wasn't already able to be done.

With llSetLinkPrimitiveParams() however, the avatar appeared (to this function) to be an additional prim, and that meant it could be manipulated. Those manipulations were pretty much limited to two things: Repositioning the avatar relative to the object, and certain other manipulations that would crash the simulator.

The repositioning tasks were all able to be accomplished by other means, though you needed extra prims to do the job. Being able to handle it directly was a time-saver, although apparently an unintentional one. Yes, it was a bug - or an exploit if you prefer. It was also a superior solution to a common scripting task. It made all sorts of furniture and multi-pose systems more efficient - at the risk of intentionally or unintentionally causing simulators to crash.

The community took to it like wildfire, as it was discovered, and almost all the new creations used the new function to perform tasks that had previously been performed in less efficient ways. Many creators retrofit their old gadgets to work the new way too.

And then, at the beginning of the month, Linden Lab found the simulator crash problem and fixed it. They fixed it by making sure the function did what it was supposed to do - that is, not allow the manipulation of avatars.

Then the screaming began. The use of the function in this way was nearly universal by this time, and the people at Linden Lab who worked on this code were - essentially - completely unaware of that fact. To them, it was a bug - an exploit, even. The code was permitting something that they had not intended to permit, and worse, people were using it to crash simulators.

So they fixed it in the simplest possible way. Hide the avatars from the function. Done.

Did I mention the screaming?

Intentional or not, the use of this exploit was widespread. It was everywhere. It was a part of people's play. A part of their businesses. The fix went in, and everything, everywhere in Second Life that used it stopped working, all at once.

Hastily (it took several days), Linden Lab responded to the huge quantity of broken product and refixed the function. This isn't actually the first time something like this has happened, where an unintentional glitch that has been fixed has caused widespread problems, breakage, or breakdown in user experience. It's probably not going to be the last, either. Sometimes those fixes mess up resident work, and sometimes they mess up the work of other staff at Linden Lab itself, even.

Whether it is intentional, or unintentional, anything that is perceived as a feature quickly becomes widespread. Look at megaprims. They're everywhere these days. Take a tour of the Linden inworld offices and you'll see quite a few megaprims in the construction of some of them.

The problem is one of communication, certainly. In each case, where these fixes went in, the people doing the fixing were simply unaware of the impact of the changes they were making. While I know it is not their policy to discuss exploits, perhaps Linden Lab really needs to bring some of their own bugs and bugfixes to their bug triage sessions for other eyes to look at.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Linden Lab and IBM Collaboration on Virtual Standards

Filed under: News, Linden Lab, Op/Ed

With virtual worlds now firmly embedded in popular culture, the virtual landscape may seem like an archipelago with Second Life, There, Active Worlds, Doppelganger, Multiverse, Kaneva, and many more. Sailing between these isolated little islands is possible, but the voyage is daunting.

One of the earliest sailors willing to make the journey was Wells Fargo who, after creating their virtual presence in Second Life, decided to pack up and move to Active Worlds. While I'm not privy to the details of their migration, I can surmise that the textures were transported to Active Worlds by hand while the geometry data was either exported via scripts so that it could be generated from within Active Worlds, or simply re-built from scratch. Long story short, it wasn't an effortless transition.

Well all that may be changing with a recent announcement that Linden Lab and IBM will be working together on standards to bridge the gaps between virtual worlds. The announcement included several areas of focus with the overarching theme that users will one day be able to move freely between virtual worlds including "Universal" Avatars, Security-Rich Transactions, Platform Stability, Integration with existing Web and business processes, and Open standards for interoperability with the current web.

Possibly the most inspirational quote from the announcement was:

"Open standards in this area are expected to allow virtual worlds to connect together so that users can cross from one world to another, just like they can go from one web page to another on the Internet today."

So how would this all work? I envision some sort of intermediary standard for geometry, texturing, and interactive scripting. When an avatar crosses a virtual world border, it will be translated into this intermediary standard and then passed along to the destination virtual world (all while they inspect your passport and search your luggage for contraband.) The destination world will read the data and translate it into the local formats necessary to render the avatar. Edges of virtual regions may be encoded with destination information much like Second Life SLURLs so that the appropriate virtual world client will launch as you make your transition.

Perhaps one interesting side effect of all this could be the different ways different platforms will "interpret" your avatar. The intermediary data that defines the Aimee Weber avatar may look photo realistic in Second Life, while looking cartoonish in IMVU (and I would love to see how Aimee looks in a Picasso based virtual world!)

Here's another biggie:"Collaborating on the requirements for standards-based software designed to enable the security-rich exchange of assets in and across virtual worlds."

Asset management has always been one of the biggest challenges for Linden Lab because it's difficult (perhaps impossible) to maintain asset control and performance on a distributed system. Therefore Second Life has implemented one asset server to keep an eye on what we have, who we give it to, and what the next owner is allowed to do with it. So where does a second, third, or thirtieth asset server fit in all this?

One idea would be that those cool boots you bought in Second Life will be converted to the intermediary data along with your avatar, and then passed to the destination world's asset server. This is more complex than surfing from website to website for a number of reasons. The limbo-like area between virtual worlds will be a great place to lose assets if the transaction system is not air-tight. As many Second Life residents lament, disappearing assets in Second Life are a constant problem. Now imagine working with the technical support departments of two or more separate companies in hopes of tracking down your lost boots while each one is blaming the other for the glitch ... naturally!

Trust is another important issue. When we move from one virtual world to another, we will be passing valuable virtual assets to the destination in hopes that they will play by the rules and not simply take copies of all our stuff! This means that each virtual world company will have to keep tight reins on which other virtual worlds may serve as destinations from their own location. In fact, consortiums of virtual worlds will have to come to unanimous decisions as to which virtual worlds can be trusted to "join the club" because it would take only one bad virtual world plugged into a consortium to place the assets of the entire collective at risk.

Finally there's this quote:
"Allowing current business applications and data repositories - regardless of their source - to function in virtual worlds is anticipated to help enable widespread adoption and rapid dissemination of business capabilities for the 3D Internet."

So the plan isn't just to bridge the gap that separates virtual world from virtual world, but also the gap that separates virtual world from the existing web and database structures used in business today. One may recall Daden, the UK metaverse company that created a 3D visualization demo of live flight data inside of Second Life as well as Aimee Weber Studio's live 3D weather visualization map for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. These demos were cool, and arguably useful, but what is missing is the ease-of-use that businesses come to expect from data visualization tools available with Excel.

So what will we expect to see? I imagine there will be one massive virtual collective that emerges with mainstream goals. Competition will still exist between virtual worlds, but without the isolation we currently see. The question of which platform a corporation or organization should choose for their virtual presence will become less important. Smaller, isolated collectives may emerge from countries like China who wish to keep tighter controls over, well, everything. I'm also looking forward to the tiny, subversive, anti-establishment collective that will undoubtedly emerge.

What IBM and Linden Lab are setting out to do is ambitious, and ultimately very cool. There is a long road ahead, but I think it's safe to say that we're now starting to see the water levels recede and the archipelago slowly merging into a single, rich and diverse land mass.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

ESC launch sanctioned new viewer to tie in with CSI:NY in SL

Filed under: News, Linden Lab, Mixed Reality
We already knew that, if you live in the USA or Canada, or surf the internet desperately, 24th October (a fortnight today) will see SL feature in CSI:NY.

What has just come to light is that ESC will be launching a new, commercially licensed, viewer for SL at the same time. Details are currently rather sketchy, but there will be an option to sign up from the CSI:NY site, and it will be available to residents. The interface will, according to the press release, more closely resemble a browser than the current client (one has to ask which browser, Sidebars? Customisable folders on a book marks bar? Widgets?) which is probably a good thing, because the current viewer is not the most elegant piece of UI design. That doesn't mean it can't happen, of course, but it does strongly signal their intention to leave those prices unaltered before 1 January. Maybe things could jump if Linden Lab suddenly needed a cash influx before then, but it doesn't seem likely right now.

Linden Lab does indicate that the pricing of ... well, just about everything is 'under review' - but at this stage of things, that's pretty much a given. Almost everything seems to be under almost constant review.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

LL to raise tier rates from $195 USD to $295 USD "soon"

There aren't many details yet, but one thing is clear - the rate hike is coming. Back in November of 2006, when the new fee for islands rose to $295 USD, Zee Linden stated that the prices would be grandfathered in through at least 2007. Given that 2008 is rapidly approaching, you would think that island owners would receive warning of the impending doom.

After a town hall meeting with Zee, LL committed to giving residents a minimum of 60 days notice before they change pricing plans on them. This contradicts other reports that the inflation will occur in November. All signs point to some time after the 1st of the new year. It would be nice to receive clarification from them, though!

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Guess what will get you banned...

No, really, because you do have to guess. You must comply with the updated Community Standards which are, as far as we can tell, not available to you.

Today, an abuse department Linden contacted a resident on a matter of sexually suggestive images involving minors. I've been passed a transcript, but I'd rather not quote the piece to avoid the resident suffering from any additional woes. The abuse Linden insisted that 'certain' items of content had to be removed, but refused to indicate which ones.

The resident was certain that they had no such content fitting the description of the infraction. The abuse Linden insisted that they did, but refused to indicate which items, only that the offending items be removed or face suspension/banning.

In order to support his case, the abuse Linden quoted the Community Standards. Only they're not the ones on the website, or in the library folder of your inventory. Apparently there's another set that has never been published.

Throughout the conversation, the resident pleaded, wheedled and begged for some clue as to what content they owned might be in violation of the rules. The abuse Linden adamantly refused to give any indication, repeating the same quotes over and over again. In fact, the Linden in this case was so on-message as to be almost incomprehensible.

What it comes down to is opinions. In the resident's opinion, none of their content was a problem. In Linden Lab's opinion at least one item is, but they adamantly will not say which one, resorting only to canned responses.

Not a good situation. Imagine if I turned in this post, and my editor said "You have to change some of these sentences."

"Which ones?"

"Some of them are offensive."

"I don't get it. Which ones?"

"The offensive ones. Change them to be less offensive, by tomorrow, or you're fired."

That's the situation our poor resident is in.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
